西暦745年頃に光明皇后により開基、本尊は薬師如来。
華厳宗の寺院で、新といっても結構古いです。

本尊の薬師如来座像をはじめ、十二神将の多くが国宝である。
敷地は広くないが、香薬師堂などに風情のある庭がある。
