ここは大分県別府市 鉄輪にある、双葉荘という貸間(かしま)旅館。
温泉の入浴は、健康や美容に効果があり、多くの日本人に人気がある。
特にこの別府の鉄輪の温泉は効用を実感できる所が多い。
貸間というのは、長期の温泉での療養や湯治の宿で、
食器や冷蔵庫など自炊や生活のできる食器や設備が整備されていて、
なかでも、地獄釜という温泉の蒸気を利用した、不思議な調理器があります。
ただし、外国人は泊まれません。
理由は女将さんは外国語ができないからです。
逆にいうと、日本での常識があり多少の気遣いができて、
同泊して通訳の出来る日本人の友人か、日本語で意思疎通ができる人であれば、
宿泊できるかもしれません。
女将さんが僕に話してくれたのは、外国人が来て対応に困ったけれど
通訳できる宿泊客の方がたまたまいて"俺が面倒みるよ"と言ってくれたから
たまたま泊めることが出来たそうです。

エビは少し遠いスーパーで買い、軽く水洗いをして
地獄釜に引き上げ用のザルとともに入れました。
味は茹でるのと違い温泉の蒸気で蒸しているので、
旨味が逃げずに独特の風味が加わり美味しくなる。
中でもとくに、温泉の蒸気と合わさった濃厚なエビのだし汁が
温泉の風味とエビの旨味が凝縮して異常に美味しかったです。

良質の食材が手に入れやすい地域。
